On this page you will find information about joining the Rapid City New
Horizons Band. If you have questions or want more information about joining
and playing in the band, please see our Contacts page.
- The Rapid City New Horizons Band is open to any adult (over 50,
wants to be over 50, not even close to being over 50, etc.). The original
New Horizons Band in Rochester, New York was for adults over 50, but
over time, that has changed considerably. The age requirement is now
a local decision made by each band/orchestra/chorus independently.
- There is no audition for the band. It is open to anyone wanting
to play, regardless of experience or ability.
- The band meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Canyon Lake Activity
Center. The concert band plays from 9:00-11:00, with a long break for
refreshments in the middle. The dance band meets at 11:00 for about
an hour. Watch the Performances or Member Area pages for information
on where the band performs.
- Most people in the band played an instrument perhaps many years
ago back in school, and now most of them are retired and enjoying returning
to a band.
- There is a very nominal tuition charge at the start of the fall,
spring and summer sessions. This pays for the rent at the Center, music,
equipment and other expenses.
- Absolute beginners are encouraged to take private lessons, and then
join the band as they become more comfortable on their instrument. Beginners
or returning players (from many years ago) will find that there are
experienced players (some professional and some former band directors)
who are more than happy to provide help and encouragement.
- This band is above all else, a fun and non-intimidating group that
welcomes adult players of all abilities.
